Creative Advertisements with Ambient Media

For companies who are trying to reach potential consumers through the use of persuasion, ambient media can be very useful.  Ambient media is thought to be a non-traditional marketing medium that is used as an alternative or in addition with traditional forms of advertising.

Ambient media also refers to types of advertisements that are located in areas where consumers would not normally suspect to see them.  Usually, these types of advertisements are placed at areas close to the point of purchase.  The term ambient media first originated around 1999 in the United Kingdom, and has been accepted as a successful form of marketing ever since.

The expression of ambient media was said to have begun during the peak of a popular music genre known as ambient music.  The music utilized electronic textures that would produce a specific atmosphere giving the meaning of ambient to mean something that is in the environment.

Alternative advertising, or ambient media, is continually growing and developing to help reach larger audiences.  Companies make use of colorful displays and interactive kiosks.  This is just an example of creative methods of ambient media.  Ambient media is thought to be somewhat surprising, yet not obnoxious or overwhelming.

The following are examples of creative ways that ambient media can be used in advertising:

  1. Gas Pumps

Even though gas prices have increased dramatically over the past year, consumers are still having to drive even more than before.  Many are carpooling, but gas is still a necessity.  Gas pump billboards come in various sizes and frames, and are usually located on top of the gas pumps. These can be referred to as “toppers””.  They allow the viewer to see the ad on both sides of the gas pump.  Some companies also advertise on the gas pump nozzles so that the consumer will be forced to see it when they insert the nozzle in their gas tank.

  1. Commercial Restrooms

Commercial restrooms have also become a large targeting area for ambient media.  The print or framed ads are usually placed on the backs of stall doors of women’s restrooms, or above the urinals in men’s restrooms.  They are located in places that range from restaurants to sports pubs.  Companies can also have specialty boards produced with baby items or beauty products to target a specific audience.

In our world today, ambient media has become a vital part of all advertising campaigns.  The key factor is to choose a beneficial location that will work or enhance the amount of viewers you are trying to target.  The advertising business is said to be trying to find ways to capture what is referred to as the “lost audience”.  Due to the fact that consumers are faced with all types of advertisements during their everyday lives, it is important that you get their attention with a surprising ambient media tactic.  It is also important to invest in enough locations so that they will continue to see your advertisement over and over again.  Use a clever ambient media method that will catch the consumer off guard, or in a location that they would never expect.
