Direct response TV advertising – a media buying guide

While the internet continues to bring in consumers in great numbers the simple fact remains that television remains a great medium for the media buying contingent. There have been many different trends in television advertising over the lifetime of the medium, yet the one that most media buyers consider a winner is the direct response method, commonly referred to as DRTV.

What is DRTV?

A direct response TV advert is one that is designed to grab the attention of the consumer and bludgeon him or her – not literally – into responding to the call. Typically a DRTV advert will be short and sweet, sometimes as short as a minute, and will pack a lot of information into this very compact package.

The trick with DRTV is to educate the consumer, and to make him or her believe that the product or service on offer is not only something they want, but something they absolutely need.

A good media buyer will plan a DRTV campaign to run at prime time, and as the format is short it is very cost effective use of the most expensive air time available.

The method involved with DRTV

DRTV remains the most simply formed version of TV advertising and is among the most successful. Media buyers have been familiar with the short sharp shock tactic for many a year, and DRTV can be considered the friendly face of that approach.

Typically the DRTV advert will begin by introducing a consumer to a common problem, and then immediately offers a solution.

This is used very frequently by manufacturers of household cleaning products; everyone remembers the short and very blunt commercial that features a loud talking man with a now very popular and oddly named spray cleaner, in which a copper coin is cleaned in seconds flat. That is a prime example of a DRTV campaign – it says ‘this is the problem, you all have it, and here is the solution’.

The simplicity of DRTV is the attraction to both consumers and media buyers, as there is no need for a sophisticated routine – just a short and simple explanation of what is wrong, and how to counter it.

Stressing the urgency

The conclusion of a DRTV advert can be the most important section, and frequently it relies upon urgency and lack of time as being the deciding factors.

The advert will try and convince the consumer that not only is the product needed, but it is needed right now!  This is the pay off of any good DRTV campaign as leaving the consumer with time to decide is not conducive to them buying the product. Some will even go as far as offering an instant solution – ‘Call this number NOW!’ – thus bringing the sale to a conclusion.

A good DRTV campaign is reliant, however, on a good product, the right timing and the right audience, and this is why most are used for household products at prime time.

For media buying purposes the DRTV option remains a very good way of reaching an optimum audience in a cost effective manner.
