Recent advertising trends have seen new media – the internet and its many offspring – take the stage as the leading lights, yet radio ad space remains a very interesting and often cost effective method of promoting a brand or service. The advantages of radio ad space are many and varied thanks to the variety that is present in radio itself, and thus a different approach can be wise. Radio is considered old hat by many, yet that ignores the very real and very large numbers of people who listen to radio across the wavelengths.

Radio ads draw listeners in

The areas where radio ad space are best used tend to be those where a wide span of people are targeted, even if they may sometimes be a specific audience. The beauty is that a listener is tuned to a station, and will be listening as and when an advert is broadcast. Much like television the radio listener is a captive audience, yet in many ways radio has the advantage over television in that people are likely to remain in place when the adverts interrupt the programme.

How many people get up and make a cup of tea during the prime time ad breaks on TV? This doesn’t happen on radio, in many ways because the listener is generally more casual, or in some cases because they are – quite literally – captive, say driving a car.

Having a more receptive audience is also reflected in results, and radio ads tend to be less harsh and demanding than those with a visual impact. You are not required to watch, and the mind is more susceptible to background sound than it is to pictures that one can turn away from.

Target the right people

Like all good advertising campaigns the use of radio ad space should be geared towards getting the message to the greatest number of people. However, with radio there is one added advantage that, while found in other media, is often more pronounced in radio.

Think of three groups of peoples: a teenager, a man of 30 to 35, and a retired pensioner. Now think of the sort of radio that each is likely to listen to. It becomes very clear that the interest is very different: the teenager will likely tune into a music channel, the thirty-something may be listening to a sports channel, and the pensioner to a daytime talk or discussion show.

Of course, these are broad generalisations, but the fact remains that different groups of people have different tastes and requirements. As radio is geared towards many different channels offering many different genre, the advantage of radio a space is that it can be utilised to reach a particular market group in a very specific way – more so, even, than in the case of television.

While radio may be viewed by some as a relic from the dark ages it remains a very, very popular form of broadcast media and, with the advent of internet radio taking things to the next step of development, is likely to for some time.
