Local Radio Ad is an overlooked method of marketing

Many people consider local radio ads as a poor cousin of the advertising and marketing world, but nothing could be further from the truth. Local radio ads are both effective and very affordable, and for a number of reasons can be a better way of getting your brand to the market place than the apparently more preferable methods of advertising.

With the advent of the internet in recent years turning the advertising world on its head it is no surprise that marketing personnel look to this area as the preferred method of advertising. However, like many advertising genre there are positive and negative points to each, and this applies to radio as well. It also applies to the more traditional methods of advertising – such as newspapers and magazines, plus television – and in many different ways.

Radio has many advantages; the first is the captive audience that is often held by a radio broadcast. Breakfast and tea time radio shows are very popular, and commercial stations capitalise on this by appealing to the driver, who may well be stuck in slow traffic for some time twice a day. This truly is a captive audience, as there is nowhere the driver can go. Some may retune, but on the whole a local radio ad is heard by a great number of people, and is much less costly than a television ad.

Local radio continues to exert a pull on the public; used as an information service – keeping people in touch with the state of the traffic, and public transport problems - it can be very effective indeed, and this also helps in terms of advertising and how effective it can be. People listen to local radio to get local news, and it is most likely they will pay attention to local adverts, too.

Service industry adverts are very successful as local radio ads, and the attraction remains. The internet may seem like the be all and end all, but it needs someone who is in a particular demographic group to be attracted to a specific advert; likewise, television advertising, a very widely used medium but one that relies on particular time slots for its advertising success. Also, the number of people who leave the room when the adverts come on – or surf channels for three minutes – has led to it being a less impressive advertising medium than it once was.

Local radio ads take little time, and are very simple and quite precise; the loyalty that comes with radio broadcasting is much stronger than that which is presented by television. Radio tends to draw different viewers for different shows, and therefore offers a great deal of variety. Given the popularity of radio, it makes sense to consider a local radio ad as part of a well planned advertising campaign, and also to consider it for specific campaigns.
